My name is Brian Ulsh, and Karate is my life.

See, your whole body is moving in new ways, every class. You'll move your legs in ways you never have with the different kicks and stances you learn. You'll move your arms in new ways as you learn to strike, block, and hold special stances. And because it engages your whole body - extra weight slips right off of you.
All in all, it's a life-changing experience.
And I believe in it so much that I've dedicated my life to brining Karate to as many people as possible.
It's been my journey to show people how to defend themselves, as well as how to connect to the inner-peace and calm that's there in all of us...
Sometimes we just don't see it.

It relieves back, neck, and other body pain from the relaxing stretching, and constant movement of the body.
And it strengthens your sprirt as you tackle challenge after challenge - always succeeding Aways coming out on top.
There's a reason it's been around so long: It works.

One of the things we learn in class is not just how to control our bodies - but how to control our minds and emotions too. I feel now that I have an inner-calm now. It's like nothing can shake me. I'm polite and courteous in situations where I used to sometimes be short with people. I smile genuinely at all of my cus- tomers. I'm more appreciative of my family and friends.
This is NOT just learning how to defend yourself. This is learning how to make your life even better. In every way.

This is crazy...Even when I let my stomach hang out- I still see the muscles! I didn't even have a stomach like this in my teen years - or in my 20s.

People often mistake self-defense for violence. We teach self-defense here. Self-defense means doing everything in your power to AVOID violence! It means being diplomatic and peaceful. In fact, people who have had problems with violence in the past often become peaceful and balanced through Hapkido training.

Okay, so for me Hapkido was hard at first. My body was NOT used to moving that way! Plus the closest to sports I ever came was cheerleading for a month in high school. But now my body is honestly able to do things I never thought possible. I feel so flexible. And limber. And so full of energy! It's like I wake up and I just want to move, move, move and go do things! I have more energy for my kids, for my job, for my husband, for my friends, and for myself.

Hapkido, is an esteemed Korean martial art that focuses on self-defense through a comprehensive array of techniques. This art form incorporates joint locks, grappling, throwing techniques, kicks, punches, and various striking attacks. In addition to unarmed combat, Hapkido offers training in traditional weaponry, including knives, swords, ropes, nunchaku (ssang juhl bong), canes (ji pang ee), short sticks (dan bong), middle-length staffs (joong bong), with a distinct emphasis on different weapons depending on the specific tradition.
Hapkido practitioners utilize both long-range and close-range fighting strategies, executing jumping kicks and powerful hand strikes at a distance, while employing pressure point strikes, joint locks, and throws in closer encounters. The art emphasizes the principles of circular motion, force redirection, and opponent control, enabling practitioners to gain an advantage through effective footwork and body positioning—leveraging technique over sheer strength.
The roots of Hapkido trace back to Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, as taught by Choi Yong-sool, who adapted the art upon his return to Korea after living in Japan for three decades post-World War II. Choi’s system was later enriched by his disciples, incorporating kicking and striking techniques from traditional arts such as Taekkyon and Tang Soo Do, along with various throwing and ground fighting methods from Japanese Judo.
